Matthew Berman responds to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's warning about AI's effects on employment with a more optimistic scenario: people might manage AI agents and produce more. His dollar figures are an illustration, not evidence that jobs or output will follow this path.

  1. 1A warning about jobsBerman cites Dario Amodei's 2025 Axios interview. Axios specified entry-level white-collar jobs, rather than all white-collar jobs.
  2. 2An optimistic alternativeBerman thinks the same number of people could do much more work with AI; this is his expectation, not a demonstrated outcome.
  3. 3A simplified calculationHe compares a hypothetical worker producing $300,000 of output with three AI agents producing $900,000; costs and real-world constraints are not fully modeled.

핵심 정리

  1. Amodei warned that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs, a narrower claim than Berman's shorthand in the video.
  2. Berman's alternative is a scenario in which workers manage AI agents rather than necessarily being replaced.
  3. His output and return calculations are hypothetical and do not establish future employment or profitability.

A warning and a different view

Berman reacts to Amodei's warning about AI and jobs. He offers a more optimistic prediction of greater human productivity.

I react to an Axios interview in which Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that AI could eliminate half of white-collar jobs within one to five years, with major economic hardship. His original warning was more specific: [Axios reported](https://www.axios.com/2025/05/28/ai-jobs-white-collar-unemployment-anthropic) that he was referring to half of entry-level white-collar jobs. Both the potential losses and their timing were a warning about the future, not an observed outcome.

I have a more optimistic view. Rather than assuming a wave of unemployment, I think it is possible that the same number of people will be able to do vastly more work. I illustrate that idea with a simplified example, not an employment forecast or a measurement of actual performance.

02

The hypothetical worker and agents

He uses illustrative figures to compare one worker's output with three agents' output. The calculation is not a forecast supported by measured results.

In my baseline example, a company invests $100,000 in a worker who produces three units worth $100,000 each, or $300,000 in output. Counting the difference between output and that investment, I call the return 200%. This illustration leaves out other costs and assumes that the output can be valued at those amounts.

Now imagine that the same worker manages three AI agents, each producing three units worth $100,000 apiece. That would make $900,000 in output in my example. Perhaps people will manage armies of agents, but the example assumes the agents can deliver that value and does not establish the cost, reliability, demand, or number of jobs in such a future.
