Matthew Berman asks Gemini 4 Argon to build an Excel-like browser application and tries basic arithmetic and SUM operations. He notes a formula-entry error and argues that code alone may become less defensible as a business advantage. The short demonstration does not establish feature parity with Excel or that full software products will cost nothing.

  1. 1A quick prototypeBerman asks Argon to recreate a spreadsheet interface and says the run took about 20 minutes.
  2. 2Testing formulasHe tests basic arithmetic and SUM while observing a formula-entry error.
  3. 3Business implicationsHe predicts falling software costs and argues that products need advantages beyond their code.

ポイント

  1. The model produced a browser spreadsheet prototype in roughly 20 minutes in Berman's demonstration.
  2. Simple arithmetic and a SUM selection work in the shown test, though one formula-entry error occurs.
  3. A handful of formula checks do not establish compatibility, reliability or full Excel feature parity.
  4. Berman's prediction that software will become nearly free is an opinion, not a cost measurement.

Building and testing a spreadsheet

Berman shows a browser prototype and tries a few formulas. He reflects on the potential implications for software businesses.

I asked Gemini 4 Argon to clone Excel. I did not set up an extended loop, so it ran for about 20 minutes; during the run it opened Excel on my computer to inspect it. The result resembles Excel in a browser, and I like the initial appearance.

I enter a simple addition formula and it works. When I drag and try a SUM formula, I notice an error: the equals sign should have remained at the beginning. After re-entering it, I select rows and the shown SUM calculation works. These checks cover only a small fraction of spreadsheet behavior.

Testing a SUM formula
スライド 1 / 1Testing a SUM formulaThe prototype displays a formula and a selectable range during the demonstration.

I think this points toward software becoming very inexpensive and that businesses will need advantages beyond lines of code. That is my prediction: building, testing, maintaining and operating a complete product can still involve substantial costs, and this prototype does not establish parity with Excel.
