RESUMEN

En 30 segundos

In March 2024, Matthew Berman reacts to reporting that Apple was discussing using Google Gemini for iPhone AI features and questions why Apple would seek a partner. At the time, the talks were reported rather than confirmed. In January 2026, Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration on Apple Foundation Models based on Gemini technology; in June, Apple described models custom-built with Google for its next generation of Apple Intelligence.

  1. 1Reported negotiationsThe 2024 report said Apple and Google were discussing Gemini-powered iPhone features; no deal was final at that time.
  2. 2Berman questions the strategyHe asks why Apple would seek outside models given its resources, while offering his own view that model training is relatively manageable.
  3. 3A later partnershipIn January 2026 the companies announced a multi-year collaboration on foundation models for future Apple Intelligence, including a more personalized Siri.

Conclusiones

  1. The March 2024 report described negotiations about some future iPhone AI features, not a finalized deal.
  2. Berman questioned why Apple would partner given its chips, money and talent; his view of training costs is an opinion, not an established cost estimate.
  3. In January 2026 Apple and Google announced that future Apple Foundation Models would be based on Gemini models and cloud technology.
  4. Apple’s June 2026 research describes a family of models custom-built with Google, including on-device and Private Cloud Compute models.

The reported talks and a later development

Berman reacts to reports of Apple and Google discussing iPhone AI features. The companies later announced a model collaboration, distinct from an agreement confirmed in 2024.

Apple is reportedly in talks with Google about using its AI for new iPhone features. The [March 2024 report](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/1-apple-talks-let-googles-054100258.html), citing Bloomberg, described negotiations and said terms and implementation had not been finalized. It did not establish a completed deal or that all of Siri would run on Gemini.

That sounds strange to me: Apple has strong chips, money and talent, so why not make its own AI? I think training a model does not take that much, although training and deploying a competitive model can involve substantial compute, data, engineering and safety work. The video offers my question and opinion, not evidence of Apple’s internal reasons.

Later update: in [January 2026 Apple and Google announced](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/company-announcements/joint-statement-google-apple/) a multi-year collaboration under which the next Apple Foundation Models would be based on Gemini models and cloud technology, for future Apple Intelligence features including a more personalized Siri. In [June 2026 Apple described](https://machinelearning.apple.com/research/introducing-third-generation-of-apple-foundation-models) a model family custom-built with Google for on-device and Private Cloud Compute use. Those later announcements should not be mistaken for a confirmed agreement at the time of the 2024 video.
