Application timing and campus roles

Kristen describes rolling review and what selected candidates can expect. She also discusses campus applications and ways to connect if the firm does not visit a school.

I work in recruiting in Jane Street’s New York office and joined in 2019. We review applications on a rolling basis, so we recommend applying when you feel ready to interview within the next few weeks. It is also useful to keep our process moving at a similar pace to other applications, particularly when another company has quick deadlines.

After applying, candidates selected for an interview can expect to hear from a recruiter within a few days. The recruiter will explain clearly what to expect next.

For campus positions, we look for interesting résumés from intellectually curious students. You do not need to know OCaml or have finance experience; we will teach you what you need to know.

We try to visit as many campuses as possible but cannot be everywhere. If we do not visit your school, we still hope you will get to know us online. Look out for virtual events and in-house programs throughout the year.

02

Choosing roles and preparing

Applicants can express interest in roles and offices. Kristen points to interview preparation materials and mock interviews on the firm’s website.

You are welcome to apply for the roles and offices that interest you and indicate those interests in the application. Whether you apply to one role or several, a recruiter will consider you for all roles for which you are eligible.

To prepare for interviews, look at the materials on our website. There are also mock interview videos for some roles, which can be a useful starting point.

03

Reapplying

Kristen notes that some people are hired after applying again. She recommends reflecting on new academic or professional experiences.

Some people have been hired after applying a second or third time. Before reapplying, consider whether new academic or professional experiences make your résumé and candidacy different. We generally think it takes about a year to accumulate new information to share.
