Accounting and the workday
Jake explains the accounting team’s transaction and reporting responsibilities. His day involves regular team catch-ups and collaboration across departments.
My name is Jake. I work on Jane Street’s accounting team in the New York office, and I started in 2021.
The accounting team compiles, records and reconciles internal and external transactions, then reports them in financial statements, surveys and other ad hoc reports. Jane Street relies on this work to maintain relationships with counterparties, vendors and regulators. The group contains a number of different functions and subteams.
A typical day includes a team catch-up to understand what everyone is working on and what is happening that week. Other meetings arise throughout the day, including collaboration with trading desks and operations. Accounting touches many departments, so I get to work with a lot of different people, and I usually have lunch with friends too.
Questions and interviews
Knowing when to ask for context is a useful skill. Jake advises candidates to demonstrate problem solving and clear communication.
One of the most useful skills I brought to Jane Street is knowing when to raise my hand and ask a question, and knowing which person or resource can give me the most complete answer. You will be assigned things you do not already understand; to move forward, you need to ask for the missing information and context.
For candidates preparing for interviews, I recommend not focusing too heavily on technical knowledge. It matters, but problem solving matters too: you may not know the subject of a question in advance, so you need to diagnose the problem, identify which resources you need and which you do not, and clearly communicate your understanding, reasoning and conclusion.
Learning and culture
Jake values events that expose employees to subjects beyond the firm’s business. He describes an inquisitive, fast-paced and flexible culture and appreciates his colleagues.
Jane Street feels different partly because of employees’ mindset. Beyond the perks, I appreciate the firm’s commitment to helping us develop as people as well as employees. It brings in speakers, comedians, musicians and authors on subjects outside its core business; I find that enriching, and it also helps us at work.
I would describe the culture in three words: inquisitive, fast-paced and flexible. People are curious about why things work as they do and how to improve them. Things move quickly, but people still take time to make sure the work is correct.
Flexibility also means respecting work-life balance and recognizing that time away helps people return ready to do their best. My favorite thing about Jane Street is the people: they are intelligent, bring varied educational and professional backgrounds, and are enjoyable to know outside work. I have made some amazing friends here.
