Foundations and finance

Varun introduces his work on the equities desk and the university courses that proved useful. He says developers can learn the necessary finance concepts after joining.

I am a software developer on the equities desk in Jane Street’s London office, and I joined in 2019. Many of the courses I took at school have helped me here, especially foundations such as operating systems, networks, information security and some programming-language theory.

You do not need finance experience to apply for a developer role. Jane Street has become good at teaching new developers the financial concepts and intuition they need to succeed in their work.

02

Learning OCaml and finding a team

An internship boot camp pairs learners with mentors to work through exercises. Team matching involves conversations about roles and the work each team does.

During my internship I learned a lot of OCaml and Jane Street’s libraries through the OCaml boot camp. It is a course lasting a few weeks in which you are paired with a mentor and work through exercises to become familiar with how the firm uses the language and its libraries.

Before joining, developers go through team matching. They talk with different teams to understand the work and the role they would play. The goal is to find a team where they will be happy and productive.

03

Collaboration and initiative

Technology touches many parts of the business, giving developers opportunities to contribute across areas. Varun describes a culture of autonomy and initiative.

Both Jane Street and its developer culture are collaborative. Technology runs through compliance, recruiting, accounting, trading and operations, putting developers in a position to contribute in many areas.

Developers have autonomy in their work and in the ideas they bring to teams. They are encouraged to move between teams and share what they have learned, and people feel empowered to take initiative on projects they consider valuable.
