Supporting the office

Jorge introduces the New York hospitality group and its responsibilities. The team plans ahead for food, new hires and visitors.

My name is Jorge, or George, and I work in the Hospitality Group under office administration in Jane Street’s New York office. I have been here since May 2015.

The team handles a range of work, including reception, travel, facilities operations and food. Our main responsibility is to make the office comfortable, but we also take pride in planning weeks, months or years ahead. The food team plans menus in advance, and we prepare comfortable desks and working spaces for new hires and visitors from other offices.

02

Skills and backgrounds

Jorge enjoys the variety of daily work and responding on short notice. He discusses teamwork, attitude and the range of backgrounds represented on the team.

No two days look the same. I genuinely enjoy coming in without knowing exactly what to expect, and I thrive on getting things done as they arise, sometimes with very little notice.

Communication, being a good team player and asking questions are important skills for this work. For me, the most important thing is a great attitude and being happy to come to work. We welcome people from many educational and professional backgrounds, including hospitality, performing arts, retail and people starting their first job after school.

03

Collaboration and ideas

The team works closely with other service groups. Jorge values an environment where ideas can be discussed, tested and developed.

We work closely every day with other service-oriented groups, especially HR, technology and physical security. The work is not a cookie-cutter experience: people are encouraged to discuss ideas, some of which work and some of which do not. I love bringing an idea to a meeting and seeing it grow into something people use every day.
