The role and its requirements

Dan introduces his role on the London ADR desk and describes the breadth of trading desk operations work. He says prior financial knowledge is not expected.

I work in trading desk operations on the ADR desk in London, and I joined Jane Street in 2017. The role is varied: it includes supporting trading, answering compliance questions, and helping operations. Different people on the team bring different strengths to that work.

We don't expect a financial background. It's more about what you can learn than what you already know. In interviews, we hope candidates can get something from the process and show their personalities. Come with an open mind: we value inquisitiveness, and we want to see how you respond to challenges.

02

Interviews and growth

Dan discusses curiosity and responding to challenges during interviews. Responsibilities develop with individual interests and desk needs.

As you grow into the role, you discover where your strengths and interests lie, and you generally grow in those directions when they align with the work. The needs of the desk matter too: every desk is different, so what one needs may not be what another needs.

03

Questions and early impact

He encourages colleagues to ask questions and challenge things. He values the people and the variety of opportunities to learn and contribute.

One thing I wish I'd known when I joined is that it's impossible to ask too many questions. Even now, I don't ask enough. Reading up on something can help, but asking someone can sometimes be faster and teach you more.

I enjoy the people and the fact that I don't always know what to expect when I arrive. There is so much to learn and do, and you can have an impact very early on. As a new joiner, don't be afraid to challenge things.
