RESUMEN

En 30 segundos

Matthew Berman recommends using separate topic threads instead of mixing every task in one long OpenClaw conversation. He says this has helped his own workflow. Session separation can reduce irrelevant history, but it does not guarantee perfect memory, and context and persistent memory are distinct.

  1. 1Avoid one mixed conversationBerman says switching among unrelated subjects in one long chat makes returning to a prior topic awkward.
  2. 2Limit unrelated contextKeeping topics separate can reduce irrelevant conversation history in the active context.
  3. 3Use topic threadsIn his setup, each topic maps to its own session, making it easier to resume the relevant conversation.

Conclusiones

  1. Separate topics into threads or sessions so a conversation can stay focused on one subject.
  2. In Berman’s configuration, each topic has its own session and conversation context.
  3. The context window is what the model sees for a run; persistent memory is stored and retrieved separately.
  4. A session can still be compacted or forget details, so thread separation is not a complete memory solution.

The problem with one long chat

Berman says a mixed conversation makes topic switching and focused context harder. He contrasts his own experience with users reporting memory problems.

I recommend avoiding one long OpenClaw conversation for every task. When unrelated subjects are interleaved in a single thread, switching away and returning to a previous topic becomes awkward. I have found that separating my conversations by topic works well for me, though this personal experience does not prove the approach fixes every memory problem.

Separate topics into sessions

He recommends topic threads so each conversation has its own session. Context management can still involve compaction and separate persistent memory.

A long mixed conversation can also put unrelated history into the model’s context. In my setup, I use threads so each topic has its own session and I can return directly to the relevant conversation. This gives the assistant a more focused working context and makes the interface easier to navigate.

Topic threads in a messaging group

Each topic in my configuration has a separate session, but that does not mean the full history always fits in the model’s window. OpenClaw’s [context documentation](https://docs.openclaw.ai/concepts/context) distinguishes the active context from memory stored for later retrieval, and older conversation may be summarized or pruned. Thread separation helps organization; it does not guarantee that no detail will be forgotten.
