RESUMEN

En 30 segundos

In this short interview excerpt, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says AI is entering an era of helping discover significant new knowledge. He predicts that approaches used in mathematics will also help produce advances in biology, medicine, materials and energy; these broader outcomes are his expectations.

  1. 1A discovery eraAltman says AI is beginning to help uncover significant new knowledge.
  2. 2From math to other sciencesHe expects similar approaches to aid biology, medicine, materials science and energy.
  3. 3Indirect effects on daily lifeHe predicts that people may experience improvements without feeling they are directly using AI.

Conclusiones

  1. Altman believes AI is beginning to help discover difficult new knowledge.
  2. He expects approaches used in mathematics to extend to biology and materials science.
  3. He anticipates benefits such as new medicines and energy sources, though the clip does not present evidence for those outcomes.
  4. He expects the benefits to be felt through improvements in everyday life.

AI and new knowledge

Altman says AI is beginning to tackle difficult problems and discover significant knowledge. He sees this as a new phase of development.

I think we’re entering an era when AI will help us discover significant new knowledge. We’ve talked about this for a long time, and perhaps it started earlier this year, but now AI is doing very difficult things and figuring out complicated, important new knowledge.

02

Possible effects across science

He expects progress in math to translate into other fields. He anticipates benefits in daily life through medicine, materials and energy.

I believe the same approach that has worked in math will work in biology, helping us find new medicines, and in materials science, helping us find new sources of energy, among many other things. This is one of the possibilities I’ve always been most excited about.

I think this could have an enormous impact on people’s lives. It may not feel directly like using AI; it may simply feel as if the world has improved as society goes about its work. I expect the effect to be transformative.
