What the operations team does

Haley introduces the post-trade responsibilities of the operations team. She describes a project to integrate a growing trading business into its workflow.

I’m Haley, and I work on Jane Street’s operations team in New York. I joined the firm in 2017. Our team takes care of what happens after a trade is made, helping it process smoothly.

Different subteams perform different functions. They make sure books and records are correct, look at upcoming company events that might affect our positions, and coordinate with each other so the process runs smoothly.

One project I’m working on is how to integrate a new trading business that the firm wants to scale into the operations workflow. I’ve been able to collaborate across operations groups as well as with developers and traders to find a solution that works for everyone.

02

Collaboration and culture

Operations works with teams throughout the firm. Haley describes the culture as curious, collaborative, humble and hardworking.

Operations collaborates across many areas of the firm, both within the team and with infrastructure teams, traders and developers. That cooperation helps ensure trades are processed, and collaboration is a big part of Jane Street’s culture.

I would describe the culture as curious, collaborative, humble and hardworking. People enjoy sharing information, teaching and asking questions. Someone who knows a great deal about a topic will often explain it simply without overstating or understating what they know.

People are also willing to roll up their sleeves, whether a task is large or small. When a new problem arises, it is striking to see departments come together and work on a solution that serves everyone.

Skills, onboarding and questions

She emphasizes communication, honesty and work ethic, and says a finance background is not required. She wishes she had known earlier how welcome questions were.

Strong communication is important in operations: we talk constantly across departments and with external counterparties. Honesty matters too. We process a huge number of trades each day and rely on one another to flag issues so we can address them together and improve our processes. A strong work ethic is also valued.

You do not need a finance background to succeed on the team. I came from bioengineering and cybersecurity, and the onboarding program and helpful colleagues taught me what I needed to know to get up to speed.

I wish I had known when I joined how welcome questions are. At first I waited for the perfect moment, when someone seemed free, but people are excited to explain things and questions are encouraged. Colleagues support and challenge one another, which makes coming to work enjoyable.
