Product-customer fit

Prioritizing early enterprise opportunities.

Mark Goldberger tells Harry Stebbings how he approached enterprise sales at an early stage. His examples and revenue figure are personal accounts from the 2023 interview.

Goldberger argues that an early salesperson can find product-customer fit with particular accounts before the company has established broad product-market fit.

He prioritizes accounts whose needs align with the product’s strengths and the direction the company intends to pursue. He reports closing approximately $13 million in revenue in his first year.

Lean, pivot or walk

Qualification and building the sales playbook.

His qualification framework is “lean, pivot, walk”: invest in opportunities that fit existing strengths; explore an alternative arrangement where some needs fit; and walk away when the requested capabilities are far outside the roadmap.

For partial fits, he gives the example of a customer using different solutions in different regions. The right arrangement depends on what the customer will accept.

Goldberger sees founders as responsible for understanding customer pain points and broader product-market fit. He says the person doing the selling should help develop the sales playbook, whether that is a founder or an early hire.

He advises against hiring a sales vice president before there is a seller learning the specific business. This is his sequencing advice, not a rule that fits every company.
