Truth and competing models

Musk’s claims and Berman’s response.

In this May 2024 video, Matthew Berman comments on selected clips of Elon Musk’s VivaTech interview about AI. Musk’s company xAI competed with other AI developers, so his assessments also reflected a commercial interest.

Musk argues that major AI systems should be maximally truth-seeking and criticizes what he sees as political bias in competing products. He cites examples of problematic model outputs; individual examples do not establish a system’s overall accuracy or intent.

Berman agrees that extreme errors are concerning but asks who decides what counts as truth in contested cases. He argues that Musk and his own company can have biases too, and calls for credible sources and verification.

Musk speculates that systems trained to avoid certain statements could produce harmful outcomes and suggests curiosity and truthfulness as safety goals. These are his arguments and hypothetical scenarios, not evidence that the outcomes would occur.

02

Training and model choice

Development choices and open alternatives.

The interview returns to Musk’s earlier support for a pause in advanced AI development and his decision to build xAI. Musk compares shaping an AI system to raising a child; Berman adds that training data, fine-tuning and system instructions can influence behavior.

Berman favors open models and a choice of systems with different values. He predicts a market with multiple models rather than a single system serving every community; this is a view of how adoption might develop.

03

Oversight and safety

Accountability, uncertainty and competitive pressure.

An audience member asks how development can remain transparent and accountable. Musk favors some oversight of large models and reiterates his emphasis on truthfulness, while Berman questions how truthfulness can be measured and verified.

Musk proposes accurate answers with acknowledged uncertainty. Berman says communicating uncertainty and pointing to sources can be useful, though those practices alone cannot guarantee an answer is true.

Musk says in 2024 that xAI still needs to catch up with competitors and predicts that it will become competitive later that year. Berman treats the timing skeptically and challenges Musk’s suggestion that safety becomes a priority once capabilities are comparable.

04

The future of work

Speculation about jobs and meaning.

Asked about work, Musk imagines a benign future in which AI and robots provide abundant goods and jobs become optional. He assigns his own probability to that scenario; it is speculation, not a forecast established by evidence in the interview.

Berman uses chess as an example of people continuing to value human performance after computers surpass top players. He expects an intermediate period in which small teams become more productive with AI, while acknowledging his optimism.
