Hospitality and office administration

Jack introduces his London role and the team’s responsibilities, from reception and travel to food service. His generalist role changes with the office’s needs.

I’m Jack, part of the hospitality and office administration team at Jane Street in London. I joined in 2022. Our team covers a variety of work: welcoming people at the front of house, supporting smooth travel between our global offices, and providing breakfast, lunch and snacks. We also fill in many other gaps around the office.

Some teammates specialize, but I have stayed fairly general, so every day is different. My work depends on the season and whether interns are visiting. I have regular travel tasks, may cover reception, and attend meetings about office sustainability. It is a matter of balancing those responsibilities and meeting with different people.

02

Skills and workplace culture

He values problem-solving, adaptability and building relationships. He describes an open environment in which people can contribute ideas.

Problem-solving and being personable are important skills on our team, as is openness to making connections across the office. Our work supports people’s experience in the workplace. Someone who is adaptable, curious and interested in finding better ways to do things can do well here.

I find Jane Street’s culture open and empowering. People are encouraged to be themselves, dress as themselves and bring their personalities to their roles. Direct, efficient language leaves room for open conversations, and from the first day people can contribute ideas and feel heard.

03

A changing and connected office

Jack discusses how new colleagues shape the office, and describes social activities and community groups. He closes with what makes the workplace feel distinctive to him.

New joiners bring different perspectives, and the environment changes with them. We keep assessing what is working and how the office needs to adapt. It has changed a lot, and I find it exciting to see.

We have team dinners that provide a chance to connect socially, as well as ping-pong, an arcade machine, foosball, chess and poker. Summer and winter parties and different community groups offer other ways to get involved and meet people.

It is hard to isolate one thing that makes the culture distinctive: the way people communicate and work together just feels right to me. People are relaxed while also working hard and achieving goals, and they feel empowered to do their best work.

When I tell friends I work at a finance or technology firm, it can be hard for them to imagine how creative, bright, colorful and diverse the environment is. Our work feels important because it contributes to people’s day-to-day lives, and I enjoy making those connections across the office.
