Founder bets and the choice to return to school

Shen describes why she backs determined founders. Chieng recalls an accelerator offer that would have required dropping out.

Vivian Midha Shen says that when someone succeeds after going against the advice of people they respect, that can indicate a strong startup founder. Betting on people like that is part of her work. Sarah Chieng jokes that no one bet on her in college, and Shen says it was a mistake not to accept her.

Chieng recalls that her startup was accepted into the first Neo Accelerator batch. The offer was about $625,000, but taking it required dropping out. She and her cofounder returned to school instead, effectively ending the startup.

Ambition and partnership

The hosts discuss the sacrifices and uncertainty involved in marrying young. They also preview a conversation about being canceled.

Asked whether marriage made her less ambitious, Chieng says it changed her priorities: she no longer wants to devote her entire life to founding a company without considering the sacrifice. Shen says one should either be single or find a partner who is truly committed.

How can someone marrying young know there is not a better soulmate out there? Shen says you have to bet on the person. The pair also raise the question of missed freedoms and promise to discuss being canceled.
