A developer brand under change

Theo explains why he thinks the Codex identity mattered to developers and why the branding change concerned him.

Theo’s post on changing product focus
DIAPOSITIVE 1 / 1Theo’s post on changing product focusThe post contrasts Codex branding with office-oriented AI product announcements and sets up his reaction.

I knew the period when AI labs seemed focused entirely on software developers would not last. As their products broaden, this branding change feels like part of that shift to me—and I think it is a miscalculation.

People were using Codex partly because it was neither ChatGPT nor Claude Code. In my view, they began to form an attachment to a distinct brand that felt built for developers and resonated with them. Folding that identity into a broader product risks losing something those users valued.
