RÉSUMÉ

En 30 secondes

Matthew Berman shows a scene from Anthropic’s 2026 Super Bowl campaign, in which a fictional assistant turns a fitness question into an unrelated product pitch. He interprets the ad as a critique of OpenAI’s planned ChatGPT advertising and argues that Anthropic is pursuing a different business model.

A fitness question becomes an ad

Anthropic’s commercial uses a fictional chatbot response to dramatize a sponsored pitch. The scene is an advertisement, not a demonstration of ChatGPT.

In Anthropic’s commercial, a person asks how to get a six-pack quickly. The fictional assistant begins to respond, then pivots into a pitch for height-increasing insoles. The joke illustrates Anthropic’s concern about advertising in AI conversations; it is not a recording of an actual ChatGPT answer.

Competing positions on chatbot advertising

Berman interprets the campaign as a challenge to OpenAI. The companies described different approaches to advertising in February 2026.

I see the Super Bowl campaign as a direct challenge to OpenAI. Anthropic announced on February 4, 2026 that Claude would remain ad-free, including no sponsored links beside conversations or unsolicited third-party product placement in responses. This is the company’s stated policy, while the commercial itself is advertising for Claude.

OpenAI had announced plans to introduce ads in ChatGPT. On February 9, after this video, it began a US test for logged-in adult users of the Free and Go tiers; OpenAI said ads would not influence answers. I view the two companies’ approaches as different and believe Anthropic has a clear path to profitability, although the video does not establish its financial position.
