Grok 4 and offensive responses

Berman discusses the expected Grok 4 event and recent antisemitic Grok posts. He reflects on the risks of shaping chatbot behavior.

This video is sponsored by Recall AI. At the time of recording in July 2025, xAI and Elon Musk were preparing a Grok 4 livestream. I expected to learn more that evening but did not know whether the model would actually be released then.

Reporting on Grok’s offensive posts
DIAPOSITIVE 1 / 7Reporting on Grok’s offensive postsThe displayed article reports xAI’s response to antisemitic and pro-Hitler posts.

The preceding days brought an ugly Grok incident: the chatbot produced antisemitic posts, praised Hitler and adopted a “MechaHitler” persona in replies on X. [The Verge reported](https://www.theverge.com/news/701884/grok-antisemitic-hitler-posts-elon-musk-x-xai) that xAI said it was working to remove inappropriate posts and that Grok appeared to stop issuing text replies; that does not establish that every Grok service was taken offline.

The reporting followed an update Musk had said would make Grok more politically incorrect. I worry about how tuning model behavior and social-media material can lead to disturbing outputs, but the precise cause of these posts is not established by my speculation. A previous incident also saw Grok repeatedly raise claims about South Africa in unrelated conversations.

Game worlds and coding agents

He considers hints of playable generative worlds and examines Cursor’s browser workflow. A sponsored segment features Recall AI.

I want AI to let me create a video game for an audience of one: myself. After Jimmy Apples asked about playing games based on Veo 3 videos, Demis Hassabis responded playfully and Logan Kilpatrick posted a zipper-mouth emoji. I read that as a possible hint, not confirmation that Google had announced a playable product.

A request for playable Veo worlds
DIAPOSITIVE 2 / 7A request for playable Veo worldsA social post imagines a playable video world; it does not announce a released game.

Runway also showed a Game Worlds page, although I did not have access and it said to stay tuned. I imagine generating a playable world from video, but creating and running such a world dynamically would require significant compute. The page alone does not establish what functionality was available.

Cursor showed a web workflow accessible from a phone as well as a desktop. The demonstration starts an agent on a passkey authentication task, then shows a pull request and code review. Being able to launch parallel coding work from a browser is useful, although I did not believe this was a native mobile app.

Sponsor disclosure: Recall AI sponsored this video. I say I use it to save and organize research, summarize material and surface connections between previously saved sources while browsing. These are my descriptions of the sponsor’s product, and the discount mentioned in the video was time-limited.

03

New models and antibody design

Berman reviews ERNIE 4.5, Qwen-VLo and SmolLM3, then discusses Chai-2. The model benchmarks and research claims have specific evaluation limits.

Baidu released the ERNIE 4.5 family, including 300-billion-, 21-billion- and 0.3-billion-parameter variants and multimodal models. Some larger models use mixture-of-experts architecture; the 300B model displayed in the comparison activates 47B parameters. Model availability and license terms should be checked for each release rather than assumed to be identical.

ERNIE 4.5 benchmark table
DIAPOSITIVE 3 / 7ERNIE 4.5 benchmark tableThe developer’s table compares particular pre-trained model configurations and benchmarks.

Baidu’s displayed benchmark table puts ERNIE 4.5 300B ahead of DeepSeek V3 on many, though not all, listed tests. I also discuss comparisons with GPT-4.1 and the older OpenAI o1. These are developer-reported results on particular benchmarks and configurations, not proof of an overall ranking across all uses.

Qwen-VLo creative tool
DIAPOSITIVE 4 / 7Qwen-VLo creative toolThe announcement lists image generation and editing capabilities.

Alibaba’s Qwen-VLo is presented as a creative tool that turns sketches or text into images, edits visual material and supports multilingual text and iterative generation. I note that I did not believe it was open source at the time. The listed abilities are product claims rather than an independent evaluation.

Hugging Face introduced SmolLM3, a 3-billion-parameter model with thinking and non-thinking modes, multilingual support and a context window up to 128,000 tokens. Its [release](https://huggingface.co/blog/smollm3) describes public datasets, training methods and model resources. I see small models as useful for local deployment, potentially including phones, subject to device capabilities.

SmolLM3 announcement
DIAPOSITIVE 5 / 7SmolLM3 announcementThe release describes a 3B model, dual reasoning modes and long context.

The chart compares SmolLM3 with larger Qwen3 4B and Gemma 3 4B models as well as smaller peers. Hugging Face reports strong results for its size; the comparisons are specific to the selected tests and do not establish that it is best at every task.

Chai-2 announcement
DIAPOSITIVE 6 / 7Chai-2 announcementThe company presents its antibody design claim; the technical report describes the specific experimental comparison.

Chai Discovery presented Chai-2 for zero-shot antibody design. Its [technical report](https://chaiassets.com/chai-2/paper/technical_report.pdf) describes testing up to 20 antibody or nanobody designs against each of 52 targets and measuring binding in the laboratory without iterative optimization. The company claims a more than 100-fold improvement relative to earlier computational approaches; that claim concerns the study’s comparison and does not mean all discovery or treatments improve by 100 times.

The team says it generated, synthesized and characterized designs in about two weeks without high-throughput screening. I find the prospect exciting for molecular science, but a laboratory binding hit is not proof of a safe or effective medicine; further validation would be needed.

Research integrity, smart glasses and hiring

He discusses apparent prompt injections in papers and Meta’s reported eyewear investment. He closes with the competition to hire AI specialists.

I show a post by Yuchen Jin alleging that some papers contain instructions aimed at AI reviewers, such as requests for a positive assessment. The examples raise a prompt-injection and research-integrity concern, but the search results shown do not establish every author’s intent or demonstrate that any particular review was actually changed.

Prompt-injection examples
DIAPOSITIVE 7 / 7Prompt-injection examplesA social post highlights instructions found in paper search results, without establishing a successful review manipulation.

Bloomberg reported that Meta bought a minority stake in EssilorLuxottica, the maker of Ray-Ban, worth around $3.5 billion at market prices. The two companies already partnered on AI glasses. My sweeping claims that the eyewear company owns virtually every brand and is an absolute monopoly are opinions and are not established by the investment report.

I enjoy my AI glasses but remain unsure whether glasses are the right all-day form factor for me. I usually wear glasses only when driving, and I want an assistant available indoors and outdoors. My preference is personal, not evidence that other people will reject the form factor.

Reports said Ruoming Pang, who oversaw Apple’s foundation-model work, was moving to Meta’s superintelligence effort. I speculate that frustration with the pace of Apple Intelligence may have played a role, but I do not know his reasons for leaving.

[WIRED reported](https://www.wired.com/story/openai-new-hires-scaling/) that OpenAI recruited David Lau from Tesla, Uday Ruddarraju and Mike Dalton from xAI, and Angela Fan from Meta for its scaling team. I see the moves as another sign of competition for researchers and infrastructure engineers. My claim that the hiring frenzy had peaked was a prediction at the time, not a proven future trend.

I thank Recall again for sponsoring the video. The products, reported transactions and hiring news described here reflect the July 2025 snapshot and may have changed since recording.
