RÉSUMÉ

En 30 secondes

Matthew Berman reacts to xAI's March 2024 release of Grok-1 weights and architecture. He connects it to Elon Musk's dispute with OpenAI and interprets the timing as competitive pressure. xAI described the released checkpoint as a 314-billion-parameter base model rather than a chat-fine-tuned system; the release did not include all training data.

  2. 2A competitive interpretationHe connects the release to Musk's dispute with OpenAI, but attributes the motive to his own interpretation.

À retenir

  1. xAI released Grok-1's base weights and architecture under Apache 2.0 in March 2024.
  2. The 314-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model activates a subset of weights for each token.
  3. The released base checkpoint was not fine-tuned for dialogue, and its release did not include a complete training dataset.
  4. Berman's explanation of Musk's motives is his interpretation rather than a verified account.

Grok-1's open weights

Berman discusses the release, its license and model architecture. The base checkpoint and training data have different availability.

Elon Musk said xAI would release Grok, and now the company has published Grok-1. I connect this to Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and interpret the timing as a way to pressure a competitor. That account of motive is my opinion.

xAI describes Grok-1 as a 314-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, with 25% of its weights active for a given token. The released weights and architecture use the Apache 2.0 license. This is the raw pretrained base checkpoint, not a model fine-tuned for chat, and publishing weights and code does not mean the complete training data was released.
