Wojtek and Sergeant Reckless

The conversation starts with a Polish military bear and turns to a horse serving with Marines in Korea.

Chris Williamson asks The Fat Electrician about remarkable animals in military history. The guest starts with Wojtek, a bear associated with Polish forces in World War II, before turning to his favorite example: the Korean War horse Sergeant Reckless.

The guest recounts that Polish troops adopted Wojtek and says the bear learned to carry artillery ammunition. When an image appears, he cautions that it is a mock-up, while maintaining that the story of the bear is real.

Sergeant Reckless was a horse acquired by US Marines during the Korean War. The guest sets the story in mountainous terrain, where vehicles could not easily reach positions on the hills and ammunition had to be carried to the troops.

02

Carrying ammunition in Korea

The guest describes the terrain, training and the horse’s work during the fighting around Outpost Vegas.

He describes a force holding high ground while peace negotiations continued. In his account, the Marines used a 75 mm recoilless rifle and needed a way to transport its ammunition up difficult slopes.

The guest says the Marines obtained a mare from a racetrack and trained her to tolerate gunfire and carry loads. He calls the training “hoof camp,” a play on boot camp.

He recounts Reckless’s work during the fighting around Outpost Vegas. The horse carried ammunition repeatedly and, he says, also helped carry wounded soldiers. He does not remember the exact quantity moved and offers an uncertain estimate.

03

Returning to the United States

He recounts the horse’s journey, reception and later life with the Marines.

According to his account, Marines wanted to bring Reckless home after the war despite official resistance. He tells a colorful story about arranging transport through Japan and onto a civilian ship bound for the United States.

He says the horse was held at the dock over livestock health concerns, then tested and taken to a Marine Corps ball. He corrects his initial location from San Diego to San Francisco while telling the story.

The guest describes the horse eating flowers at the ball and recalls stories of Marines giving her drinks. He says publicity eventually helped persuade the military to provide her a home on a Marine base.

He says Reckless received the rank of sergeant and that a junior Marine was assigned to exercise and care for her. In his telling, nobody rode her, so her handler ran alongside her during morning exercise.

04

The breeding story and dogs

A comic breeding anecdote leads into a lighter discussion of working dogs and the guest’s pet.

The guest then recounts a comic story about an attempted breeding plan. In his version, the handler had not been told the plan and intervened when he saw another horse mount Reckless.

He says a thoroughbred was later brought in, but the uninformed handler prevented that pairing too. When Reckless became pregnant, the identity of the father surprised the people who had planned the publicity.

In the guest’s account, the Marines changed their publicity plan and announced the foal’s arrival on a sign. His joke that this created gender-reveal announcements is part of the anecdote, not a historical claim established in the interview.

Williamson shifts to a video of working dogs at a parade and jokes that an imagined “Big Golden” is trying to persuade him to get a golden retriever. He is amused by one dog that appears less focused than the others.

The guest describes his own large goldendoodle, which he says weighs about 110 pounds. The pair joke affectionately about its size and appearance before the conversation gives way to channel and sponsor messages.
