In February 2026, Matthew Berman discusses Elon Musk’s announcement that Tesla would end Model S and Model X production and shift its attention toward Optimus robots. The announcement concerned those two models, not an end to all Tesla car production; the robot’s future impact remains a prediction.

The end of two Tesla models

Berman introduces Musk’s plan to end Model S and Model X production. He recalls their performance and engineering significance.

Elon Musk spent years naming Tesla cars so their model names spelled out a hidden message. In January 2026, he announced plans to end production of the Model S and Model X. That decision concerns two flagship models; it does not mean Tesla is stopping production of all cars.

The Model S helped make Tesla what it is, and its high-performance Plaid version can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under two seconds. Musk has described the Model X as one of the most difficult technical challenges he has faced—a striking assessment from someone who also makes rockets.

The Optimus bet

Berman connects the change with Tesla’s humanoid robot program. An investor predicts robots will eventually eclipse the company’s cars.

Why end the flagship luxury line? Berman connects the decision with Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot. Musk said Tesla would convert the Model S and X production space at its Fremont factory for Optimus. Some observers have very high expectations for the robot; investor Jason Calacanis predicts that people will eventually remember Tesla for something other than cars. That is a prediction, not an established result.
