A role across the firm

SPs describe the groups in which they work and their role in driving projects. They bring both local expertise and a broad view of the firm.

Members of Jane Street’s Strategy and Product team, or SPs, work in groups including finance, central risk, equity and P&L control, core services, options and client-facing technology. They describe themselves as versatile generalists whose work combines expertise in a particular area with an understanding of the wider firm.

One team member says the role involves asking what Jane Street should do next. SPs sit within many teams and help drive new lines of business and projects the firm wants to implement.

02

Rotations and useful skills

New SPs rotate across several teams before placement. Team members emphasize curiosity, initiative and communication.

New SPs rotate between two and four teams over roughly a year. Those placements can span trading, technology and infrastructure, as well as pre-trade and post-trade work, giving them a broader view of the firm. After the first year they are placed on a team, but may move again as the firm’s needs change.

Team members say people with a wide range of backgrounds can succeed in the role. Curiosity and excitement about learning new subjects are common traits. Comfort with ambiguity matters too: an SP needs to identify the next steps and take the initiative to pursue them.

Communication is central because SPs work with trading, technology, business and legal teams, as well as clients, partners and financial institutions. They help those groups have productive conversations, build consensus and move work forward.

03

Training and SP community

New hires learn trading fundamentals and technical skills. SPs share problems and solutions across the firm.

New hires come from varied educational backgrounds and start with training on Jane Street, trading and ETFs, followed by basic technical skills. Team members emphasize problem-solving, creativity, learning quickly and the way a person prepares for and approaches a problem rather than one fixed skill set.

One SP enjoys finding hidden problems where solving them can add value. Although SPs work across the firm, they describe a strong community that shares problems and solutions. Another says the role makes use of existing strengths while helping people discover new ones.
